Meet NUBAA Salute to Excellence Honoree: P. Sterling Stuckey.

Sterling Stuckey is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Riverside. Stuckey is a renowned writer and historian on Afro-American intellectual and cultural history, and one of the most highly respected scholars in the field. The 25th anniversary edition of his fundamental book Slave Cuture is noted as a seminal interpretation of slave culture that has forced a reconsideration of the neglected depths of African culture in America. An NU PhD, Stuckey was appointed Associate Professor at the Northwestern in 1971 and Full Professor in 1977. In 1971, when Northwestern’s board of trustees finally approved the creation of a Department of African-American studies, Stuckey was on the committee.
