Call for Nominations – NUBAA Board

It’s time for nominations!  Now is the time to nominate someone for one of the positions that are up for election on NUBAA Board: President, Secretary, Membership Chairman, and Program Chairman.

The timeline is follows:

  • April 20: Close of nominations
  • April 21: Dissemination of proposed amendments to Members.
  • June 12: Annual Board meeting
Annual Board Meeting will be hosted June 12 at 8am, Northwestern University Wildcat Room in Norris for the annual meeting from 8AM-noon.

Expectations of Members of the NUBAA Board Directors
In general, board members are expected to:
  • Develop a pride and ownership in the Northwestern University Black Alumni Association (NUBAA) and in the quality of its programs and events.
  • Respect the time of individual board members and respond to requests in a timely manner.
  • Effectively participate in organizational activities. Encourage others to participate as well.
  • Take their policy and decision-making responsibilities seriously. Maintain confidentiality of board discussions. Avoid self-serving policies or actions.
  • Participate fully in the ongoing evaluation of the organization’s effectiveness.
  • Attend events and scheduled board meetings. Notify the designated contact when unable to attend. Maintain contact with the Executive Committee.
  • Speak your mind during discussion, but after an issue is decided, support the group decision. The board should speak with one voice.
  • Contribute financial support to the organization, its programs and events. Pledges and contributions from each board member are requisite to successful fundraising appeals to others. Ask others to contribute to the organization.

Position: President

  • Responsible to: Board of Directors
  • Length of Commitment: Two-year term or as specified in Bylaws
  • Time Involvement: Fifteen hours per month
  • Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Provide leadership to board for setting goals and determining objectives
    • Delegate responsibility and monitor board’s accomplishments for budget and finance, programming, communication and marketing; and other related board activities
    • Set agenda, prepare materials and facilitate board meetings
    • Develop and define committee structure; appoint committee chairs
    • Assist in recruitment of new board members and committee members
    • Serve as chair of Executive Committee
    • Serve as chief operating officer and spokesperson for NUBAA

Position: Secretary of Board of Directors

  • Responsible to: President, Board of Directors
  • Length of Commitment: Two-year term or as specified in Bylaws
  • Time Involvement: Six hours per month
  • Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Maintain all original records, documents and correspondence of NUBAA
    • Take minutes at board and executive committee meetings
    • Present minutes for approval at board meetings
    • Gather documents, prepare and submit forms as directed
    • Assist President with preparation of meeting notices, agendas, and related materials including executed documents
    • Assist President and Executive Committee, as needed

Position: Board Chair: Membership

  • Responsible to: President, Board of Directors
  • Length of Commitment: Two-year term or as specified in Bylaws
  • Time Involvement: Six hours per month
  • Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Develop plan and measurable tactics to increase membership to further NUBAA’s strategic plan and achieve its annual operating goals
    • Assist with driving member participation and support of NUBAA programs, activities and events
    • Provide updates to membership roster

Position: Board Chair: Programming

  • Responsible to: President, Board of Directors
  • Length of Commitment: Two-year term or as specified in Bylaws
  • Time Involvement: Ten hours per month
  • Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Lead and coordinate assigned programming and special events; oversee execution of other activities
    • Coordinate with executive and board committees on annual programming and events; communicate early on plans, issues and results to executive committee
    • Create and update annual programming/event calendar
    • Establish and maintain support structure including but not limited to vendors, venues and volunteers
    • Build and maintain relationships and contacts within NU and in the community at large; serve as point of contact, as assigned
    • Provide feedback on accomplishments and challenges of achieving goal of assigned programs and events
