The 2015 NAA Awards – Featuring Mara Brock Akil and Arva Rice!

NUBAA is proud to have been represented at the 2015 Northwestern Alumni Awards, with two phenomenal talents being recognized with Alumni Merit Awards.

  • Mara Brock Akil (BS, Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communication, 1992): We all know Mara as the creator of Girlfriends, The Game and Being Mary Jane, but did you know she started as a writer on South Central and was a producer on Moesha? Look for Mara at the next NUBAA Summit and Salute to Excellence Gala, to be held in Los Angeles in February, 2016.
  • Arva Rice (BS, School of Education and Social Policy, 1990): Arva is only the second woman to serve as the President of the New York Urban League (NYUL), where she works tirelessly to enable African Americans and other underserved communities to secure a first-class education, economic self-reliance, and equal respect of their civil rights through programs, services and advocacy – essentially serving as a focal point for the African American community.
